Late Harvest Wines: Patience is a Virtue

Harvest is an exciting time of the year for Messina Hof and Texas wineries; grapes are finally picked off the vines to begin the winemaking process. The type of grape, year, and conditions are factors that contribute to wine, however timing is everything.

At Messina Hof Winery & Resort, we begin our harvest season in July, but grapes can be harvested as late as November in certain regions. Picking grapes later in the season is a technique winemakers use to produce late harvest wines. A late harvest wine is when grapes are left on the vine for a longer period of time, causing them to dehydrate, increasing the natural sugar content in the grapes.

Due to the considerable amount of sugar the grapes develop late harvest wines tend to be sweeter and are typically used as dessert wines.

At Messina Hof Winery & Resort, we produce a variety of late harvest wines to choose from. These wines include our Angel Riesling and our Mistella Glory Muscat Canelli.

With July already here, Messina Hof is gearing up for the 2012 Harvest season. Bring your family out this summer, and experience this one-of-a-kind experience for yourself.
